Drop Ball Advantage Rule

  2. Attacking players having surrendered possession are not required to retire 5 metres until they effect the first touch as the new defending team.

  3. When a team obtains possesion by virtue of the dropped ball advantage, the first touch effected counts as zero, the second touch as one, the third touch as two and so forth.

  4. Should a defending player fumble or commit any error during the process of obtaining possession from the dropped ball, the defending team will never-the-less obtain possession, although will be required to perform a rollball to commence possession as the new attacking team. In this case, the new defending team is required to retire 5 metres.

  5. In the case where the defence throws a late pass, forward pass or commits a similar infringement during the process of attempting to obtain an advantage from a dropped ball, the defending team will still obtain possession from a rollball in accordance with Player Note 3.

  6. Only once the dropped ball advantage has run course and the new attacking team has had a proper opportunity to utilise possession will they be liable to lose possession due to dropped ball, late pass, forward pass or other cause.

  7. After the attack has dropped the ball, any onside attacking player may place a hand on the ball in order to make the ball "dead". In this case, the defence will be required to rollball in order to obtain possession.

  8. Attacking and defending players have a responsibility to exercise minimum force while observing these provisions. Dangerous play will be liable to penalty.

  9. As for all other playing rules, the referees' judgement on the field is final.

Drop Off Procedure

  • In the event of a drawn game in which a result is required, a Drop Off situation will be utilised to decide the winner. Drop Off Procedure

  • In the event of a drawn game in which a result is required, a Drop Off situation will be utilised to decide the winner. The Drop Off rules are as follows:

  • When the game is drawn at the expiration of full time, a break of one minute shall be taken whilst captains toss. The winner of the toss receives possession and the choice of direction.

  • Each team commences the Drop Off with one (1) less player than used in the normal time. That is five (5) players for divisions playing six a side and six (6) players for those playing seven a side. Substitutions of players being permitted as per ATA 6th Edition RuleBook.

  • At the conclusion of two minutes of play, a siren is sounded and the referee will stop play at the next touch or dead ball. Each team will drop off one player, reducing their on field strength to four (4) players or five (5) in the divisions playing seven a side

  • Play will commence immediately after the players have left the field at the same point in play where it was halted.

  • The clock will not be stopped during the Drop Off, as there is no time out during the Drop Off.

  • At each subsequent two (2) minute period, a signal for another player to drop off will be sounded.

  • Once the teams have been reduced to only three (3) players each, no further drop off of players will occur, and the game will continue until a touchdown is scored.

  • The entire Drop Off will be played under the "Sudden Death" concept, that is, as soon as a team scores a touchdown, they are declared the winner.

  • During the Drop Off, before a winner can be declared, both teams must have had possession. If a team scores before their opponents have had possession, the touchdown counts and the game commences as per normal after the touchdown is awarded. Once possession is lost, the winner is then confirmed.

  • The decision on which player will drop off is entirely up to the team management, that is the captain, coach etc.

Players Note:-

  • A player/team wasting time during the Drop Off will be penalised at the mark for recommencement of the game.

  • Injured players can be replaced at any time.

  • Substitutions can be made at any time as per ATA 6th edition RuleBook.

  • During the original game, if a player/s have been sent from the field of play for the remainder of the game, that player/s cannot participate in the Drop Off.

  • A team that has a player/s dismissed from the field of play for the remainder of the game will commence the Drop Off with the same number of players they finished the game with. At the drop off time, each team will reduce their playing strength as per the rules, thus ensuring the one team will have player advantage as per the game. Once a team reaches only three players, no further Drop Off will occur.

  • Mixed teams are to drop off in the following sequence:- Male / Female / Male / Female, until the playing strength is two males and one female. Normal interchange rules apply.
